Healthy Wednesday ClubNewsletter Issue 30August 27th, 2008The Olympics have finally had their last hurrah and the juggernaut lurches on toward London in four years time. You can all start training now, but perhaps you don't have to pump iron or pound the road. There are a couple of very interesting TED talks about the physiological changes that may be possible in the near future. Check out how easily you can be a gold medal winner, albeit not quite un-enhanced! The food should be good energy food for your preparations and maybe the exercises will make up for the scientific enhancements. We've had pictures of great parents from the animal kingdom. This week we might look at the slightly less fantastic efforts by some humans. I guess you have to laugh. | |

HEALTHY WEDNESDAY ACTIVITIESMind: When Tom Hanks was alone on an island in the film Castaway his only friend became a volleyball he affectionately called Wilson. What sort of conversations would you have with various objects around your house or work. What sort od voice would you use and what sort of voice would you hear back? What topics of conversation might these inanimate 'friends' be interested in. See if you can add a little life and personality to things you have not really noticed before. Soul: If you were to take a group of people somewhere that would create a better life for everyone, where would you go and how would convince others that they should follow? If you find this is a very interesting exercise you might even test out the idea on a few friends. Maybe you might create a new type of getaway or group activity. |

Just where is technology taking us and taking the human body. Certainly, the athletes at the
Olympic Games had to stay away from chemical enhancements, but what if you could replace the
red cells in your bloodstream with nanobots that would allow you to run as fast as Usain Bolt
for more than 15 minutes without getting tired? How much could you break the world record for the 1500
metre swim if you didn't need to take a breath the whole way? Would these enhancements be banned
leaving the fastest runners and swimmers in the world to be teenagers in their high school meets?
Dazzling stuff. And to think that this sort of technology will be with us in 2020 or thereabouts! Whoa. London Olympics are ok. One more after that, but then the whole game may be changed. It may help you to have a look at Ray Kurzweill talk about some of these advancements. He also talks about limb and organ regeneration and lots more. According to Ray, these advancements are at our doorstep. What will it mean when we are able to walk inside? Will we want to?
It is, in my mind, still lifestyle that is the technique that is at our fingertips and can change our life for the better - right now! If you eat less, eat better, exercise more and love more the body will respond with extraordinary benefits and gifts of health. In just a few minutes Dean Ornish gives you a rundown of all the good things you can do. 'Our genes are not our fate and if we make these changes, they are a predisposition, but if we make bigger changes that we might not have made otherwise, we can actually change how our genes are expressed'. Them's powerful words! Now you know and if you know you have the power to act. What do you think?
It's great to think that technology may change the biological landscape, but I'm not waiting. It's amazing, all I have to do is treat my body with a little respect and realise that when I am being marketed to it is most likely that it my frailties and weaknesses that are their target. I think I would rather focus on my strengths.
